The Central Bank of Malta has issued a €2 commemorative coin and a silver coin, both having Valletta as their theme.
Valletta was built by the Order of St John in the aftermath of the Great Siege of 1565. Named after Grand Master Jean de Valette, who laid its foundation stone on 28 March 1566, Valletta has been Malta’s administrative hub and capital for more than four centuries. Within a compact area, Valletta encompasses an extraordinary concentration of military, religious, political, and civic architecture, alongside a wealth of artistic and cultural heritage. In 1980, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
