In Malta, under the Order of St John (1530-1798) public festivities marked significant religious and political events, such as the election of a Grand Master and papal accessions. These celebrations featured processions accompanied by the firing of muskets, mascoli and cannon salutes. These practices find echo in today's festa in the musketterija, the firing of salutes with murtali tal-bomba.
Rooted in Malta's past, fireworks today are an intrinsic component of the Maltese village festa, which in 2023 was recognised by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
In 2002, the Malta Tourism Authority organised a national fireworks festival, which was subsequently opened to overseas participants to become the Malta International Fireworks Festival. This annual event showcases Malta's fireworks tradition and excellence and provides a cultural tourism experience that appeals to diverse audiences.
