Central Bank of Malta launches Fifth Household Finance and Consumption Survey Report

The Central Bank of Malta hosted a webinar on 6 March 2026 to mark the launch of the Fifth Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS) Report.

The webinar was opened by the Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, Alexander Demarco. Valentina Antonaroli from the Bank's Economic Research Department presented the main findings of the HFCS report, while Valerio Sergio Castaldo provided an overview of the HFCS interactive dashboard.

Conducted every three years across euro area countries, the HFCS offers comprehensive insights into household wealth, debt, income, and consumption patterns. The 2023 wave also features an ad-hoc module examining household energy expenditure and planned investments in energy efficiency.

The survey is coordinated by the European Central Bank and conducted simultaneously across euro area Member States by respective national banks and statistical institutes. All HFCS results are carefully validated and harmonised by the ECB ensuring high statistical standards and international comparability.

The full report is available  here. Further information can also be found in the  interactive dashboard.
