Mr Oliver Bonello

Mr Oliver Bonello was appointed Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Malta responsible for Financial Stability, in July 2017 and was reappointed in July 2022. He is a Fellow Member of the Malta Institute of Accountants and holds a warrant of a Certified Public Accountant and a Practicing Certificate in Auditing. Mr Bonello is a member on the Board of Supervisors of the European Banking Authority and the Supervisory Board (SSM) of the ECB. He also represents the Bank on the ECB High Level Task Force on the Integrated Reporting Framework project. He is also a member of the Supervisory Board of the Malta Development Bank. He is Chairman of the Bank’s Statistics Committee, Risk Committee, and the Domestic Standing Committee and a member of the Bank’s Financial Stability Committee and the Joint Financial Stability Board.

Throughout his career at the Bank, Mr Bonello has worked in various divisions of the Bank and has held senior positions relating to regulation and supervision, internal audit, information systems, operational and financial risk, statistics, and financial stability. He was also engaged in the drafting and issuance of various macroprudential and microprudential policy documents and guidance notes relating to financial stability, regulation and supervision, the central credit register and its supervision, internal audit, and financial and operational risk. Over the years, he chaired or participated in various committees and working groups both locally and abroad. He was a member of the ESCB Internal Auditors Committee and the ESCB Eurosystem IT Steering Committee of the ECB, the Financial Stability Committee and the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB) Advisory Technical Committee. Mr Bonello also acted as vice-chair on the European Council Ad Hoc Working Party on the Strengthening of the Banking Union during the Maltese Presidency of the European Union in the first half of 2017. He was also a member of the Compensation Schemes Management Committee.
