Central Bank of Malta encourages public participation in ECB survey on the future euro banknote design proposal

The Central Bank of Malta is encouraging members of the public to participate in the European Central Bank's (ECB) survey on the design of the next generation of euro banknotes and to contribute their views on the future appearance of Europe's single currency.

On 23 July, the ECB unveiled the shortlisted design proposals for the future euro banknote series, marking a significant milestone in the first complete redesign of euro banknotes since their introduction in 2002. The ten shortlisted proposals are based on two themes selected following extensive consultation across Europe: "European culture" and "Rivers and birds".

The ECB has launched an online survey through which citizens across Europe can express their preferences on the proposed designs. The survey will remain open until 21 September 2026 and forms an important part of the Eurosystem's commitment to ensuring that future euro banknotes reflect the values, identity and aspirations of European citizens. It also enforces the ECB's commitment towards cash.

The Central Bank of Malta strongly encourages residents in Malta to take part in this consultation and seize the opportunity to contribute directly to a decision that will shape the appearance of euro banknotes for years to come. Public feedback will play an important role in helping the ECB determine which design concept best resonates with citizens across the euro area.  

"Euro banknotes are a tangible symbol of our shared European identity and are used by millions of people every day. Through this survey, citizens have a unique opportunity to help shape the future design of the euro and ensure that it continues to reflect the values and diversity of Europe. The Central Bank of Malta encourages everyone to participate and make their voice heard", Central Bank of Malta Governor Alexander Demarco said.

Public participation is a key element of the redesign process. The ECB will take into account the results of the public survey, together with feedback collected through a separate representative survey conducted across euro area countries, technical assessments and the recommendations of the Design Contest Jury before reaching a final decision on the future banknote design. The ECB Governing Council is expected to take this decision towards the end of this year.

The redesign initiative aims to ensure that euro banknotes remain secure, accessible and sustainable. Future banknotes will incorporate enhanced security features to help combat counterfeiting, improve accessibility for all users, including visually impaired persons, and support environmental sustainability through more durable materials and improved production processes.
