Central Bank of Malta participates in National Conference celebrating 70 years of Social Security in Malta
On 7 May, the Bank's Chief Economist, Dr Aaron G. Grech, participated in a national conference marking the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Malta's Social Security system.

This event was held in Rabat, and brought together academics, policy experts, stakeholders and senior Government officials.
Dr Grech was a discussant on the panel assessing the current challenges of Malta's benefits systems. He was asked to present evidence on recent policy innovations in pensions, working age benefits, child benefits and other poverty alleviation measures. His contribution focused on past research conducted by Bank staff and still unpublished results that will eventually feature in Central Bank of Malta publications.

The Bank's Chief Economist was also asked to discuss how best the current system could remain sustainable in future years without reducing the adequacy of pensions. Drawing on his international experience, Dr Grech set out a number of options, primarily focused on the need to improving further incentives to work particularly among older persons.
