Central Bank of Malta Acting Governor participates in the 2024 IMF/WBG Annual Meetings

The Central Bank of Malta's Acting Governor, Mr. Alexander Demarco, participated in the International Monetary Fund (IMF)/World Bank Group (WBG) Annual Meetings held in Washington, DC, in October 2024. The IMF and the WBG play key roles in maintaining the international financial system. The IMF is dedicated to fostering global economic stability, while the WBG focuses on poverty reduction and development in lower-income nations.

The IMF/WBG Annual Meetings bring together central bankers, international financial institutions, ministers of finance and development, private sector executives, representatives from civil society organisations and academics to address global issues. The Annual Meetings serve as a platform for international dialogue and allow the IMF and the WBG to provide better assistance to its members.

This year's discussions centred on the global economy, monetary policy, the 16th General Review of Quotas, the Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust, the Common Debt Framework and the reduction of world poverty.  Indeed, the IMF has successfully assisted its members in managing the different shocks they faced by adjusting its surveillance, lending and capacity development practices.

The WBG has dealt with critical issues, such as food security, gender equality, and sustainable development.

On the sidelines of the meetings, the Acting Governor also held discussions with IMF Executive Director Federico Giammusso and WBG Executive Director Matteo Bugamelli, who represent Malta in their respective institutions, as well as representatives from a leading rating agency and central bankers.
