Central Bank of Malta Governor participates in the AIIB Annual Meeting in Egypt

The Central Bank of Malta Governor, Professor Edward Scicluna, participated in the Eighth Annual Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) meeting in Sharm EL Sheikh, Egypt on 25 and 26 September 2023.

This year's annual meeting, themed "Sustainable Growth in a Challenging World", marks AIIB's first in-person Annual Meeting since 2019, and the first one in Africa.

The annual meeting is the AIIB's flagship event, attended by high level delegations from countries worldwide. This year's program consisted of an Opening Ceremony, Governors' Business Roundtable, Governors' Official Session, and a series of public and social engagement events.

His Excellency, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of the Arab Republic of Egypt attended the opening ceremony. In his opening remarks, AIIB President Jin Liquin welcomed all the participants and announced the launch of the Bank's Climate Action Plan. The plan outlines a milestone in the Bank's ongoing commitment to combatting climate change.

At the Governors' Official Session, the Governors contributed with their invaluable insights and guidance on AIIB's strategic direction and initiatives and voted on various resolutions related to the Bank.

On the sidelines of the annual meetings, Professor Edward Scicluna also met with Dr Mohamed Maait, Minister of Finance of Egypt and Governor and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the AIIB.

The AIIB is a multilateral development bank, of which Malta is a founding member, with the mission of financing the "Infrastructure for Tomorrow", that is, infrastructure with sustainability at its core. In fact, the AIIB meets clients' needs by unlocking new capital and investing in infrastructure that is green, technology-enabled and promotes regional connectivity.

The operations began in Beijing in January 2016. Today, the Bank has 106 approved members worldwide.
