Central Bank of Malta signs an updated Memorandum of Understanding with the Malta Statistics Authority and the National Statistics Office

An updated memorandum of understanding has been signed between the Central Bank of Malta, the Malta Statistics Authority and the National Statistics Office. This MoU replaces an earlier version dated August 2016 and updates previous agreements of sharing statistical information.

The signatories to the agreement are the Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, Professor Edward Scicluna, the Chairman of the Malta Statistics Authority, Professor Albert Leone Ganado, and the Director General of the National Statistics Office, Mr Etienne Caruana.

The MoU builds upon a long-standing professional cooperation between the Central Bank of Malta and the National Statistics Office. This includes the setting up of appropriate provisions on a wide range of statistical areas within which the entities interact to execute their national and international mandates. Amongst others, these include sharing and transfer of statistical data, statistical registers, sharing of knowledge and resources in the light of revised national legislation, and the fulfilment of enhanced statistical requirements at the international level. Through the MoU the institutions also commit to maintaining the highest statistical standards while also enhancing cooperation in statistical information systems and IT infrastructure.

During the event Mr Caruana expressed his satisfaction that this collaboration will continue to strengthen the national statistical framework particularly in the finance, economics, business and social domains.

Professor Leone Ganado stated that such agreements are of importance as they assert a strategic and cooperative partnership resulting in efficient and effective information systems, while enhancing the quality of official statistics and the value of the national statistical system.

Finally, Professor Scicluna concluded that this MOU will strengthen the cooperation amongst the Parties in sharing to the extent possible the required statistics in order to obtain higher statistical standards in each respective institution.
