Central Bank’s Annual Research Workshop

The Research Department of the Central Bank of Malta organised a half-day Research Workshop on Friday 26 November 2021 wherein it launched the Bank's Annual Research Bulletin. The Bulletin is the Bank's annual flagship research publication and is intended to showcase, a selection of the Bank's research and make it available to a wider audience.

The Workshop was opened by the Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, Professor Edward Scicluna. In his introduction, Professor Scicluna gave an overview of the four articles in the Research Bulletin, which dealt with the transmission of external shocks to the local economy, mobility during the COVID-19 pandemic, the relationship between education and salaries in Malta and how changes in the exchange rate are transmitted to domestic consumer prices. The Bulletin, together with the increasingly diversified range of economic publications and studies by the Bank, is publicly available on the website.

In the Workshop's first presentation, Ms Alexandra Maratou, Senior Policy Analyst at the European Roundtable on Climate Change and European Transition, focused on the role of market-based instruments under the EU 'Fit for 55' climate and energy package.

The second presentation focused on the latest modelling initiative by the Central Bank of Malta. Earlier this year, the Bank has entered into a cooperation agreement with the University of Macerata to develop a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model for the Maltese economy. Professor Francesca Severini from the University of Macerata provided a bird's eye view of this model, which is still in the development stage. Once completed, this model will be a useful addition to the Bank's suite of models to address questions related to demand and supply conditions in specific industries.

The Research Bulletin can be accessed here.
