Central Bank of Malta 50th anniversary public lecture by Professor Rosa María Lastra
As part of a series of events organised to commemorate its 50th anniversary, the Central Bank of Malta hosted a public lecture on Friday 11 May 2018 by Professor Dr Rosa María Lastra, with the theme Regulatory Developments impacting Central Banking.
Speaking on how central banks around the world responded to the great financial crisis, Professor Dr Lastra noted that the rise in populism affected central bank independence. Outlining the challenges facing the international central banking community, Professor Dr Lastra remarked that: "Regulation should be designed in good times, when rapid credit expansion and exuberant optimism cloud the sound exercise of judgment in risk management, rather than in bad times, in response to the crisis".
Welcoming participants to the lecture, the Central Bank of Malta's Senior Legal Counsel, Dr Pauline Lanzon gave a brief historico-legal commentary on the strategic developments that have shaped the Bank over the past half century.
Professor Dr Lastra's delivery was the first in a series of public lectures being hosted by the Bank in the area of central banking by prominent international scholars and policymakers.
