Exchange of Maltese Lira Fifth Series banknotes

The Central Bank of Malta wishes to inform the public that in terms of Article 62(1) of the Central Bank of Malta Act (Cap. 204), the Fifth Series of Maltese Lira banknotes, ceased to be exchangeable after 12.30 p.m. of Wednesday 31 January 2018.  Consequently these banknotes are now worthless.

Lm15,638,748 equivalent to €36,428,483.57 remained unchanged as at the deadline of 31 January 2018.

Lm412,916 equivalent to €961,835.55 were exchanged during January 2018. The largest amount was exchanged on the last day, 31 January 2018, when Lm78,178, equivalent to €182,105.75, were delivered to the Bank. The same day also witnessed the largest single transaction of Lm28,190, equivalent to €65,665.04.
