Public event: The Road to Women’s Suffrage and Beyond

A joint event by the Ministry for Gozo and the Central Bank of Malta in Rabat, Gozo, on 24 November 2017, celebrated the seventieth year since Maltese women won the right to vote.

Dr Carmen Sammut, pro-rector of the University of Malta, spoke on the difficult struggle that led to this achievement, a struggle that began early in the twentieth century. She emphasised that although universal suffrage (albeit only for persons over the age of 21, as opposed to the demand for the vote for all over the age of 18 by the more progressive elements of the National Assembly) was provided for in the 1947 Constitution, the road to effective gender equality continues.

Jesmond Gatt, Chief Officer Banking Services at the Central Bank of Malta, introduced the event, followed by Elaine Lenzo, Senior Officer at the Central Bank's Currency Operations Office, with an informative talk on coins issued by the Central Bank of Malta to mark landmarks in Maltese constitutional history. The next issue, to be launched on 1 December 2017, will be a silver coin marking the seventieth anniversary of the attainment of the right to vote by Maltese women.

The Central Bank of Malta will publish a study on the subject by Dr Carmen Sammut "The Road to Women's Suffrage and Beyond: Women's Enfranchisement and the Nation-Building Project in Malta" on 18 December 2017.

The Minister for Gozo, Dr Justyne Caruana, concluded the event with a speech focused on the difficulties that prevent women from giving a greater contribution in politics. Musical interludes were played by Britt Arend, Principal Harp of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.
