The Central Bank of Malta (the Bank) has today published an updated text of CBM Directive No. 19 on the use of cheques and bank drafts (the Directive). The Directive establishes the regulatory framework governing the use of cheques and bank drafts where the payer, payee and the regulated institutions servicing these paper-based instruments are all located in Malta.

Following the closure of the public consultation on the proposed amendments to CBM Directive No. 16 on the Regulation on Borrower-Based Measures, particularly in relation to the current stressed DSTI-O for legal persons, the Bank received feedback from a number of stakeholders.

The number of counterfeit banknotes withdrawn from circulation declined during 2025. A total of 1,097 counterfeit banknotes were presented at the Central Bank of Malta during the year, representing a considerable decrease of 29.9% when compared to 2024.
