Central Bank of Malta Governor participates in ECOFIN Meetings in Dublin

The Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, Mr Alexander Demarco, participated in the informal Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN) meetings held in Dublin, Ireland, on 17 and 18 September 2026.

The meetings brought together EU Central Bank Governors and Finance Ministers to discuss new financing opportunities in response to global challenges, as well as the sustainable financing of the green transition.

During the discussions, participants exchanged views on how European financial markets can better support the next generation of companies. Emphasis was placed on fostering innovation, creating quality employment opportunities, promoting long-term economic growth, and addressing the increasing need for sustainable development.

Governor Demarco also attended a conference hosted by the Central Bank of Ireland entitled Trust and Innovation - The Future of Finance. The conference explored the opportunities and challenges arising from technological innovation in financial services, as well as the importance of maintaining trust and resilience within the financial system.

The meetings also provided an opportunity for policymakers to explore ways of strengthening Europe's financial ecosystem to ensure that businesses have access to the financing needed to remain competitive and contribute to the European Union's economic and sustainability objectives.
