The Maltese economy expanded at a slower pace compared to the previous quarter. When adjusting for imports, external trade was the main driver of growth, as the contribution of domestic demand though positive, was small. The Bank’s estimate of the output gap remained positive but narrowed, indicating that the degree of over-utilisation of the economy’s productive capacity has eased somewhat.

The Bank’s Business Conditions Index indicates that in June, annual growth in business activity edged up slightly compared to the previous month and thus remained above its long-term average, estimated since January 2000.

The latest business dialogue held between the Central Bank of Malta and non-financial corporations shows that in the second quarter of 2023, the net share of firms reporting better business conditions declined when compared to the previous quarter. It stood at 34%, down from 41% in the first quarter of the year.

The Central Bank of Malta has just published its fifteenth edition of the Financial Stability Report which provides an in-depth assessment of the domestic and international developments that could impact the stability of the financial system. This analysis is supplemented by top-down stress tests and sensitivity analyses, to determine the resilience of the financial system.
