8 Years of Growth: The impact of the film industry in Malta

Aaron George Grech

In recent years, Malta's film industry has significantly boosted its economic contribution. Using input-output techniques the report shows that between 2018 and 2025, the sector generated a value added of €1.2 billion. Compared with the period 2005 to 2017, this contribution was about six times larger, while the sector's impact on overall employment improved fivefold. The economic report also examined the fiscal impact of financial incentives to attract foreign film productions, finding that Government revenue generated directly and indirectly by film activity consistently exceeded the cost of the financial incentives. Between 2018 and 2025, the positive balance was €12 million per year, four times that of the period between 2005 and 2017. The study confirms that the growth of the film industry has benefitted several other economic sectors. The most directly and positively affected sectors are accommodation, food services, travel and transport-related services, and sectors linked to arts and entertainment.
