The Maltese Swallowtail Butterfly is an endemic species. It is a subspecies of the swallowtail butterfly and its scientific name is Papilio machaon melitensis. This endemic butterfly was recorded by Karl Esher in 1936 in his standard reference book entitled "Die Rassen von Papilio Machaon L".
The Swallowtail has yellow wings with black vein markings, and a wingspan of 65-86 mm. It is known as farfett tar-reġina (queen's butterfly) and its larvae normally feed on fennel and rue.
