The Storm Petrel (Kanġu ta' Filfla) is a small seabird, which spends most of its life out at sea and comes to land only to breed. Storm Petrels lay a single egg per year. The island of Filfla is a major breeding ground for Storm Petrels, and it is estimated that more than half of the entire Mediterranean population nests there. Though it is probable that the Storm Petrel bred in other locations in Malta in the past, Filfla remained the ideal breeding place owing to the island's isolation.
