The Centaurea is known in Maltese as Widnet il-Baħar. It is endemic to Malta and is considered to be a highly endangered species. It grows to a height of about 70cm and produces light purple flowers in May, June and July. The Centaurea is normally found on the southern cliffs of Malta, but is also present in cliff areas of Gozo.
