Statistics

The Implementation of the Statutory Financial Information to be submitted by Financial Institutions (CBM-FIR)

The Central Bank of Malta's (CBM) Financial Institutions' statutory statistical return fulfils the following European and other international requirements:

  • European Central Bank Guideline (ECB/2018/19) in the field of External Statistics
  • European Central Bank Guideline (ECB/2013/24) in the field of quarterly Financial Accounts statistics
  • European Central Bank's Regulation (ECB/2012/14) and Guideline (ECB/2013/7) on holdings of securities statistics
  • International Monetary Fund (IMF) SDDS Plus Guide
  • International Monetary Fund's Financial Soundness Indicators Compilation Guide.

Due to these European and international obligations, the CBM's statistical requirements require breakdowns, for example:

  1. Balance sheet data split by currency, sector and maturity (stocks and flows)
  2. Breakdowns of income and services by country
  3. Security-by-security data
  4. Quality assets

The reporting of the updated CBM's Financial Institutions' statutory statistical return to the CBM will commence as from reference period Q1 2026, with the deadline of 15 April 2026. It will be collected on a quarterly basis thereafter.

The documents and other relevant material needed to assist in the data reporting process, including the data dictionary, is also available in the links below.
