The Malta Armed Forces Act, which came into force on 22 September 1970, made provision “for the raising and maintenance of armed forces in Malta and to provide for matters connected therewith or ancillary thereto”. With this instrument, Malta could set up its own standing armed forces.

On 27 February 2020 the European Central Bank (ECB) launched a public consultation on the draft ECB Regulation amending Regulation (EU) No 1409/2013 of the ECB of 28 November 2013 on payments statistics (ECB/2013/43), which updates the requirements for collecting and reporting payments statistics.

In the light of the pandemic situation, which has continued to develop during recent months, the Central Bank of Malta (the Bank) expects Malta’s gross domestic product (GDP) to contract by 7.5% this year, and subsequently to grow by 5.9% in 2021, by 4.4% in 2022, and by 4.2% in 2023.
