    Central Bank of Malta Commemorative Coin Women’s Right to Vote

    On December 1, 2017 the Central Bank of Malta issued a silver coin to mark the 70th anniversary of the coming into force of the 1947 constitution, which enshrined the principle of universal suffrage to all persons over 21 years of age.

    Research article published in the Journal of Economic Integration

    A paper by Dr Aaron Grech, Chief Economist at the Central Bank of Malta, “Did Malta’s Accession to the EU Raise its Potential Growth? A Focus on the Foreign Workforce”, has been published in the Journal of Economic Integration 2017 December;32(4) :873-890. This paper evaluates the impact on Malta’s potential output growth caused by increased migration.

    Professor John Chircop elected Vice-President of the CMU

    Professor John Chircop, Chairperson of the Mediterranean Institute at the University of Malta, has been recently elected Vice-President of the Community of Mediterranean Universities (CMU). Professor Chircop is a member of the Central Bank of Malta's Numismatic and Historical Publications Advisory Board.

    Issue of Coin Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Women’s Voting Rights

    On 1 December 2017 the Central Bank of Malta issued a silver coin to mark the 70th anniversary of the coming into force of the 1947 constitution, which enshrined the principle of universal suffrage to all persons over 21 years of age. This was the first time that Maltese women were given the right to vote – a right which was exercised for the first time on 25-27 October 1947.
