Għaqda Każini Tal-Banda Numismatic Coin Issue

On 18 July 2023, the Central Bank of Malta launched a numismatic coin issue commemorating the Għaqda Każini tal-Banda (GħKB) which this year is celebrating its 75^th Anniversary.

The Għaqda Każini tal-Banda is a nation-wide organization which counts around ninety-one band clubs among its members. It stands to strengthen relationships between various music societies and assist them in their needs, and to promote the teaching and knowledge of music.

Present for the launch by the Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, Professor Edward Scicluna, was the President of the GħKB, Dr Noel Camilleri, and members of the Committee, Mr Christopher Briffa, Mr Rendell Micallef and Mr Tonio Sammut, and from the Bank, Mr Benoit Waelkens, Mr Peter Paul Tabone, Mr Melvin Bugeja and Mr Joseph Esposito.

The Governor said that band clubs in Malta and Gozo are part and parcel of the social and culture of the Maltese islands, and have, over the years, established themselves as an insitution in the core of every town and village, aimed at spreading Maltese culture and teaching of music. Band clubs have remained relevant today.

Dr Camilleri thanked the Governor and the Bank for choosing the Association's 75^th anniversary for the commemorative coins issue.

The silver coin, which has a face value of €10, has a diameter of 38.61mm and is struck in 0.925 silver, whilst the gold coin, which has a face value of €50, has a diameter of 21.00mm and is struck in 0.916 gold. The obverse of the coins features the coat of arms of Malta, while the reverse depicts a representation of a Maltese band. The silver coins will be limited to 1,000 pieces whereas the gold coins will have a minting limit of 400 pieces. The coins, which were struck by the Royal Dutch Mint, were designed and engraved by Noel Galea Bason.
