‘Mit-tfal b’Solidarjetà’ - Prize-giving Ceremony for Coin Design Competition

Her Excellency Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta, presided over a prize-giving ceremony of a competition organised by the Central Bank of Malta in collaboration with the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation. The ceremony marks the second design of a social responsibility coin programme for secondary school students with the theme: 'Peace'. The winning design is represented on a €2 commemorative coin to be issued by the Central Bank of Malta in coin cards and commemorative coin rolls. The profits from the sale of the coin cards will go to the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation.

A total of 37 submissions were presented for this competition, which was also coordinated by the Ministry for Education and Employment. The winning design for this year, submitted by 12-year-old Katya Muscat who attends the Bishop's Conservatory Secondary School in Gozo, shows two young children holding the Maltese flag with the dove of peace flying overhead. The coin's engraver, Noel Galea Bason, converted the design to make it suitable for coining whilst remaining faithful to the qualities of an artwork produced by a young hand.

Central Bank of Malta Governor Mario Vella stated that the Bank is very proud of its role in this initiative and pledged to continue in its effort to bring the Bank close to the young with a view to encourage their sense of solidarity and social responsibility.

Her Excellency Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta, stated that, "the theme of peace is truly opportune to help us understand how in reality we must work for peace every day, even in our country, because peace is not just the absence of war or conflict. Peace must come straight from the heart of each and every one of us by understanding and recognising that each one of us deserves respect and dignity. I congratulate Katya who came up with this concept, which was then adapted by Noel Galea Bason. I also want to congratulate the Central Bank of Malta, because in this way the Bank is helping those among us who are vulnerable, and who resort to the assistance of the Malta Community Chest Fund Foundation".
