Coin Programme 2016

The Central Bank of Malta has published its Coin Programme 2016 listing the new coin products to be issued during the year as well as those which are still in stock from past years.

The coins that will be issued by the Bank in 2016 are as follows:

  • A gold and silver numismatic coin issued under the Europa Star Programme which in 2016 is dedicated to modern 20th century art. Both coins will feature 'Dangerous Sport', a sculpture by Antonio Sciortino (1879-1947). These will be issued in March 2016.
  • A silver numismatic coin commemorating the 450th anniversary of the foundation of Valletta in 1566 will be issued in March 2016.
  • A euro coin set dated 2016 consisting of the eight Maltese euro circulation coins in brilliant uncirculated version and a €2 commemorative coin featuring Ġgantija Temples, the latter bearing a special Maltese mint mark. This coin is the first in a series of seven coins featuring Maltese prehistoric sites. The set will be issued in June 2016.
  • The first in a series of seven coins featuring Maltese prehistoric sites will be a €2 commemorative coin featuring the Ġgantija Temples to be issued in rolls of 25 coins each as well as individually in coin cards. These will be issued in July 2016.
  • A gold numismatic coin depicting the copper 4 tari coin issued by the Order of St John and known as Patakka. This will be issued under the Smallest Gold Coins Programme in September 2016.
  • The first of a series of five coins featuring designs selected by schoolchildren. The theme for this year is "Love" and a €2 commemorative coin will be issued in rolls of 25 coins each, as well as individually in coin cards, the latter bearing the mint mark. The proceeds from the sale of the coin cards will be donated to the Malta Community Chest Fund. This coin will be issued in November 2016.

The Central Bank of Malta would like to inform its clients that it has recently launched an e-Shop which may be accessed from the Bank's website. Coins and other products issued by the Bank may be viewed and purchased online. This year the Malta Coins Distribution Centre (MCDC) will not be taking pre-orders for coins since these can now be directly purchased from the e-Shop.
