Money and banking, financial markets, financial accounts, balance of payments and related statistics are areas in which the Central Bank of Malta has sole statistical responsibility or shares responsibility with the National Statistics Office (NSO). A wide range of other general economic statistics are also important for the conduct of the Bank's policy making. The Bank works closely with the NSO to seek fulfilment of its requirements in these areas since in many cases there is an EU legal requirement for their collection. When general economic statistics are not available from the NSO, the Bank collects information from other national sources such as by conducting periodical sample surveys on households and firms. These surveys include the following:
Household Finance and Consumption Survey (HFCS)
This survey gathers information on the finance, income, consumption, savings, wealth and other socio-economic indicators of Maltese households.
Survey of advertised property prices
This survey, conducted quarterly, covers a sample of advertised property prices taken from a local Sunday newspaper. It thus sheds light on the developments of the housing market in Malta.
The main features and results can also be accessed in other parts of the Bank's website or in specific issues of the Quarterly Review or the Annual Report.
Wage Dynamics Survey
The Central Bank of Malta has commissioned a survey on companies in Malta as part of the Wage Dynamics Network (WDN) project. This network is a collaborative research programme within the Eurosystem. The survey was conducted over a period of six weeks between May and June 2010, primarily aimed to identify the main features of wage and price setting behaviour in Malta. The survey also covered labour market flexibility, the relationship between wages, input costs and prices, and the reaction of firms to unforeseen shocks. Statistical information pertains to 2008 as the reference year, before the outbreak of the international economic and financial crisis.
