The IBAN is
a set standard for bank account numbers that uniquely identifies
a customer’s
bank account held at any bank anywhere in the world. As from
January 2004 the commercial
banks and the Central Bank of Malta started
to include their customers’ IBAN
and the Bank
Identifier Code (BIC) with their statements.
This was the start of a transition period for the introduction
of the IBAN locally. Customers’ IBAN can only be generated by
their banks.
The IBAN validator
code in visual basic can help banks and their customers with checking
and validating IBANs. This electronic
algorithm can be used freely by banks and can be incorporated
in the banks' systems to facilitate validation of IBANs. The
Central Bank of
Malta does not assume any liability, expressed or implied,
in the use of this software.
