The Phoenicians in Malta

The Central Bank of Malta is offering for sale a silver and a gold coin with the theme "The Phoenicians in Malta" as part of the Europa Programme 2011 - Explorers. The coins were struck at the Royal Dutch Mint. The obverse of the coins shows the Emblem of Malta with the year of issue 2011. The reverse depicts a Phoenician oar-driven vessel. Although the exact date of the Phoenicians' arrival in Malta is not known, it is historically accepted that they occupied the Maltese Islands about the 8th century B.C. The 'Europa Star', which is the official logo of the programme, is also shown on the reverse side of the coins.

The coins are available for sale from the Malta Coins Distribution Centre counter at the main building of the Central Bank of Malta or by completing the order form below.

For more information regarding the issue of these gold and silver coins, please e-mail us at mcdc@centralbankmalta.org or call on (+356) 2550 6005.
