In
1995, the Central Bank of Malta, in collaboration with the
Royal Mint, issued a silver proof commemorative coin to celebrate
the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations. The reverse side
of the coin shows the former Prime Minister of Malta, Dr Giorgio
Borg Olivier, shaking hands with the former Secretary - General
of the United Nations, Mr U Thant on the occasion of Malta's
admission as the 114th member on 1st December 1964. The motto
in Maltese 'Fl-Ghaqda l-Paci' means 'Peace in Unity'. The
obverse
shows the coat-of-arms of the Republic of Malta. The coin was
struck at the Royal Mint in Proof quality and was legal tender
in Malta until 31 January 2008 for the value of Lm5.
