The
Central Bank of Malta issued a gold proof coin on the occasion
of Malta’s Accession to the European Union on 1 May
2004.
The coin was designed by Marc
Spiteri, who is the winner of a National Competition launched
by the Bank for the selection of the theme. The Maltese artist
Noel Galea Bason modelled the Emblem of Malta, shown on the
obverse of the coin.
The chosen design represents
Malta’s Accession to the European Union through the fusion
of the respective flags within the circle formed by the twelve
stars of the Union.
This Gold Proof coin was
legal tender in Malta for the value of Lm25 until 31 January
2008 and was struck at the
Royal Mint in the United Kingdom, with the specifications shown
hereunder.
